The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Sarasota (A Photographer’s Honest Take)

Uncategorized

One of the most common questions I get from couples planning a Sarasota wedding is some version of this: “When should we actually do this?”

And I love that question, because the honest answer is… it depends. Not in a wishy washy way, but genuinely: the best time of year to get married in Sarasota looks different depending on your priorities, your style, and what you want your wedding photos to feel like.

I’ve photographed weddings here across every season. I’ve shot in the thick of Florida summer heat and in the golden, breezy perfection of a November afternoon. I’ve watched couples nail their timing and watched others wish they’d planned things just a little differently.

So here’s my honest, photographer’s take, season by season.

Bride and groom after ceremony

Fall and Winter Weddings in Sarasota (October – February)

This is, genuinely, my favorite time of year for weddings in Sarasota and most local vendors will tell you the same.

The weather is what Florida is supposed to feel like. Temperatures drop into the comfortable 60s and 70s, the humidity backs way off, and the chance of an afternoon thunderstorm basically disappears. If you’ve ever experienced a Florida summer, you understand why this alone is worth celebrating.

From a photography standpoint, fall and winter light in Sarasota is absolutely stunning. The sun sits a little lower in the sky, which means that warm, golden, glowy light lasts longer during golden hour. Outdoor portraits feel easy and romantic rather than harsh and squinty.

The one thing to plan around: The sun sets earlier. In November and December, you’re looking at sunset around 5:30 PM, which means if your ceremony starts at 5:00, we’re racing the light.

My advice? Do a first look.

A first look, where you and your partner see each other privately before the ceremony allows us to knock out your couples portraits, wedding party photos, and family formals while the light is still beautiful. By the time your ceremony starts, you’ve already got a full, gorgeous gallery, and you get to actually enjoy your cocktail hour instead of rushing through portraits in the dark. Fall and winter weddings in Sarasota also tend to book up faster and fill up vendor calendars quickly, so if this is your season, start planning early.

Best months: October, November, January, February

What your photos will feel like: Warm, glowing, romantic, effortless

Spring Weddings in Sarasota (March – May)

Spring is Sarasota’s prime wedding season, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why.

Everything is lush and green. The flowering trees are in bloom, the Bay is sparkling, the gardens at venues like Selby and The Ringling are absolutely at their best. Temperatures are still comfortable, warm but not punishing and the longer daylight hours mean later sunsets, which gives us so much more flexibility with your timeline. A 6:00 PM ceremony in April? Golden hour starts right as your portraits do. It’s practically made for photography.

The tradeoff is real though: spring is more expensive. You’re competing with more couples for the same venues, vendors, and dates. Preferred venue dates book out fast, photographer availability tightens, and pricing across the board tends to reflect the demand. If spring is your dream, start your vendor search earlier than you think you need to, ideally 12 to 18 months out for a popular Sarasota venue.

But if the budget works and you can plan ahead? Spring in Sarasota is genuinely magical.

Best months: March, April, early May

What your photos will feel like: Vibrant, bright, golden hour perfection

Summer Weddings in Sarasota (June – September)

I’m going to be honest with you the way only your photographer can be: summer in Sarasota is a lot.

The heat is intense. The humidity is relentless. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in almost daily, sometimes predictably, sometimes not. By the time you get to portraits, you and your partner may both be glowing in a way that has nothing to do with love and everything to do with 92 degrees and 90% humidity.

That doesn’t mean summer weddings can’t be beautiful, they absolutely can be. But they require smart planning.

If you’re set on a summer wedding in Sarasota, here’s what I’d recommend:

  • Push your ceremony time later — 6:00 or 6:30 PM, when the worst of the heat has broken and you’re heading straight into golden hour
  • Have a solid rain plan — not just a tent, but a real backup that you actually love and won’t stress about
  • Book indoor getting ready spaces with strong air conditioning, and give everyone time to cool down before portraits
  • Lean into the drama — summer storms create incredible skies, and some of the moodiest, most stunning photos I’ve ever taken were right after a storm cleared

Summer also has some genuine advantages: venue and vendor availability is higher, pricing is often lower, and if your family is traveling in from out of town, it lines up with vacation schedules.

Best months: If you must, June (before peak storm season) or late September as things start to cool What your photos will feel like: Dramatic, warm, golden, if the timing and weather cooperate

The Bottom Line: When Should You Get Married in Sarasota?

If you want my honest recommendation? October through April is the sweet spot for weddings in Sarasota, Florida. You’ve got comfortable weather, beautiful light, and venues and gardens that are at their absolute best.

Within that window:

  • Fall/Winter (Oct–Feb) = Best weather, best light, earlier sunsets, plan your timeline carefully and consider a first look
  • Spring (Mar–May) = Gorgeous and later sunsets, just book early and budget accordingly
  • Summer (Jun–Sep) = Absolutely doable with smart planning, but go in with eyes open

Whatever season you choose, the key is building your day around the light. In Florida, the sun is everything… it can be your best friend or your biggest challenge depending on when your ceremony starts.

That’s something I help all of my couples think through during the planning process. When we work together, we’ll map out your day so that we’re always in the right place at the right time, chasing the best light, protecting you from the worst of it, and making sure every moment looks exactly as beautiful as it felt.
